The guidebook acts as a first step towards reconciliation for the Indigenous community by accepting the truth of what happened with the Residential School system, and accepting responsibility to help mend those injustices. Ghosts is a poem written by Princess Asideu.
This books aims to tell this story through a poem that takes on the perspective of a school building. In addition, there are annotations from four people involved in the program to add a secondary storyline. Those voices include Gerald Shaw; a student, Maise Shaw; his mother, Sister Mary; a teacher in the school, and John A. MacDonald; creator of the system.
Each element has been considered to honor the Indigenous community. The final product was fully handmade to provide an intimate experience.
This project is the recipient of the 2022 Jim Rimmer Community Scholarship for Design Award and received an honourable mention at the 2023 Salazar Awards.
